Jóhann Jóhannsson – Cliff Martinez – Joseph Trapanese – Łukasz Targosz

A Pole, an Icelander and two Americans – four composers whose work is poised on the edge between electronica and contemporary music, considered to be the heirs of electronic sound in film music... However, this label is painfully inaccurate. They created their own individual language by purposely blurring the line between the classic symphonic soundtrack, sound engineering, electronica, ambient and pop electric music. During the Drone Sounds concert, organised as a part of the alternative stream at the FMF, we are going to hear the original and cult music for movies such as Drive, Oblivion, Theory of Everything, Labyrinth and Sicario. Joseph Trapanese, known for his cooperation with veterans of the electronic music scene – Daft Punk – which resulted in the creation of the TRON: Legacy soundtrack. Another collaboration, this time with M83, brought the Oblivion soundtrack to life. Cliff Martinez, who composed the unforgettable soundtracks forSteven Soderbergh’s Solaris and Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive, does not compose traditional film music. His music is more minimalistic, other words cannot really be applied to his creations. On the surface they seem to be purely electronic, but in his arrangements, the composer uses many percussion instruments (tabla, idiophones, cristal baschet etc.), the sounds of which make his music exceptional. As a result his music for Solaris, Drive or Only God Forgives is very hypnotic and trance-like, and the spacious sound resembles the ambient aesthetics, where it is important to convey emotions and music. The movies by Soderbergh or Winding Refn are dominated by restlessness, fear and darkness – all of them intensified by the music. On the other hand, the unobtrusive melodies and captivating rhythms make those soundtracks popular and give them a cult status. The drone sounds, sound masses and minimalist contrasts are the defining characteristics of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music. He caused quite a commotion among the Film Academy crowd; his Oscar nomination forthe soundtrack for The Theory of Everything by James Marsh also did not go unnoticed. The world premiere of this score will be complemented by drone suites for Sicario and the famous Labyrinth, directed by Denis Villeneuve. The audience will also experience the premiere performance of the soundtrack for the newest HBO Poland TV series – The Pact, composed by the Polish composer, Łukasz Targosz - the last star to shine during the alterFMF programme.
