Young Talent Award
The winner of the Young Talent Award is Matthijs Kieboom. He was just handed his statuette seconds ago in the ArcelorMittal Poland Tinning Plant during the Grand Film Music Gala. Congratulations!Matthijs Kieboom, born in the city of Dordrecht in Holland, on June 18th 1985, pretty soon discovered he had an affection towards music. His parents stimulated him and his brother by taking them to classical concerts at a young age. At the age of 7 Matthijs started playing the cello but he switched to bass guitar at the age of 9. Since his interest in music became more and more intense Matthijs enrolled in a special high school that was combined with a pre-concervatory education. At the age of 18 he stopped pursuing his career as a bass player and started focusing on composition.
It was the combination of cinema and music that led him to pursue a career as a film composer. Despite only a couple of Dutch directors and cinematographers such as Paul Verhoeven & Jan de Bont, there weren’t many Dutch people in the top film industry. That fact given turned out to become a great stimulance in finding his own, probably European flavored, artistic voice. Due to the lack of film music programs at conservatories in Holland and Europe, Matthijs decided to focus on self studying and special courses. In 2010 Matthijs went to Los Angeles to participate in a Film Music Orchestration course given by well-known Hollywood orchestrator Scott Smalley.
In 2010 Matthijs was given a break by composer Martijn Schimmer to score the Dutch feature film Fuchsia the mini-which, a co-production of NL Film & Walt Disney Motion Pictures. After scoring about 4 drama series this was his first real film scoring assignment and also his first chance to work with an 81-piece orchestra. This project was a confirmation for him: This was what he wanted to do!
In 2011 Matthijs won the Polish Transatlantyk Film Music Competition founded by Academy Award Winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Out of about 100 composers worldwide Matthijs and 9 other composers were invited to Poznan, Poland, where the festival was held and where the composers showed the same two 10-minute films they all scored. The jury included composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, producer Richard Gladstein, producer Michael Phillips and composers Christopher Young & Peter Golub. Matthijs took 1st place and title of Transatlantyk Young Composer for 2011.
In 2012 Matthijs’ composer partner Martijn Schimmer won an ASCAP award for the music for the internationally acclaimed TV Show The Voice. Matthijs Orchestrated, arranged and co-wrote the music and all the gameshow underscores. Besides that, one of Matthijs & Martijn’s compositions for the movie Fuchsia the mini-witch was also nominated for: best Dutch children's song - 2012.
In the beginning of 2013 Matthijs collaborated with the number one ranked DJ Armin van Buuren on the score for Verliefd op Ibiza (In Love with Ibiza). Armin wrote the title song and all the party music and Matthijs took care of the score and implemented some of Armins themes in the orchestral score. The movie was the number 1 box office in Holland for 6 weeks.
