A birthday concert and an award for Wojciech Kilar

This Friday (the 20th of July) in the main hall of the Florianka Music Academy, the excellent Sinfonietta Cracovia under the baton of Robert Kabara will present music by Zygmunt Krauze, Roman Palester, and Wojciech Kilar, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year, in the framework of the 8th Polish Music Festival in Krakow. During the concert, Wojciech Kilar, one of the most outstanding Polish composers, will also receive a Golden Polish Muse for lifetime achievement.
The Golden Polish Muse is an award granted every two years by the Polish Music Association for outstanding merits in the field of promoting Polish music around the world.
The statuettes, designed by a Krakow sculptor, Marek Stankiewicz, were first presented on the 16th of November 2008 at the Krakow Philharmonic Hall, after the final concert of the 4th Polish Music Festival. Previous winners include professor Ewa Michnik (for the promotion of Polish opera music at home and abroad), the EMI record label (for long-term promotion of Polish music through phonography), and Professor Teresa Chylińska (for outstanding contribution and dedication to research on the life and work of Karol Szymanowski)

Friday’s concert will also feature the Krakow premiere of the Piano Concerto no. 2 by Wojciech Kilar. The work, to be presented by Beata Bilińska, had its preview performance on the 14th of October 2011 in Katowice. The pianist comments on the latest work of the Master: it's a piece whose greatness cannot be measured by the number of sounds. The composer has moved away from virtuosity towards extreme concentration and metaphysical contemplation.
