FMF Audiovisual Forum
Meetings with outstanding filmmakers and representatives of the world cinema, Master Class seminars and discussion panels about everything that goes behind the scenes of the film industry – the seventh edition of the FMF Audiovisual Forum promises to be very diverse. Join us at the Festival Centre in the Krzysztofory Palace and the ICE Kraków Congress Centre to take part in the Forum events.
The Krakow Film Music Festival will once again be an opportunity to meet great figures from the world of music and film. Among the most awaited guests of the festival audience are Alexandre Desplat – French composer and two-time Academy Award winner (for his music to Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water), Craig Armstrong – British composer of music to such masterpieces as Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, as well as Krzysztof Zanussi – outstanding director, but also a keen music lover. Fans of improvised music will definitely appreciate workshops with Mexican-American jazz drummer, author of the soundtrack to the famous Birdman – Antonio Sánchez.
The FMF Audiovisual Forum will be inaugurated by expert workshops for young composers from all over the world, selected in the Young Talent Award competition. This year’s Master Classes will focus on the role of conductor during the recording session, which will be held once again at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for Music in Lusławice. The lecturers of the closed part of the workshops include Richard Bellis, Gavin Greenaway, Mateusz Bień, Patrick Lemmens, Hans-Martin Buff and Gary Marlowe. This year we are also expanding our industry partnerships – for the first time the Forum will host the SyncCamp organised in cooperation with Music Export Poland and Songwriting Camp by Sony/ATV.
The open part of the FMF Audiovisual Forum meetings will start on the second day of the festival – Wednesday, May 15th. We will inaugurate it with workshops presenting what happens behind the scenes of cooperation between a film composer and a sound engineer. Subsequent seminars will cover issues such as arrangement of the soundtrack and its adaptation to the concert version, music in contemporary cinema or prestigious music and film awards (Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards).
An important part of the FMF Audiovisual Forum are discussion panels, revolving around the issues of aesthetics and functionality of music written for the cinema, as well as the composer’s cooperation with other members of the film crew. The first of ten discussions, scheduled for Wednesday, will focus on the broadly understood film music education platform. During further meetings we will talk about, among other things, what happened behind the scenes of the simultaneous screening of Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola with live music, we will take a closer look at one of the most eminent composers of the world cinema – Wojciech Kilar, we will study the influence of choral music on the narration of the film work, we will learn about how the soundtracks to Andrzej Wajda’s productions were made and we will explore the secrets of reviewing and writing texts on film music. The panel concerning the compositions nominated for the new FMF award – the Polish Soundtrack of the Year – will be a special topic of the discussion. We have planned the presentation of the prestigious award and the performance of the winning soundtrack during the official Scoring4Polish Directors gala on 16th May at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre. On the same day, the authors of the nominated compositions will meet with the festival audience – Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz, Bartosz Chajdecki, Arkadiusz Grochowski, Łukasz Targosz and Atanas Valkov will talk about their works in a special panel.
The FMF Audiovisual Forum has been held since 2013 and it serves as a platform for networking and exchanging experiences, as well as a meeting place for the newcomers to the world of film music, where they can encounter the greatest masters of the genre. “The main idea behind this project is to enable young people to have direct contact with the creators and experts of the world’s music and film industry. In this way, our festival fills a gap in Polish artistic education, in which the master-student relationship is usually an afterthought,” says Robert Piaskowski, the artistic director of the FMF. In line with the principles of the Forum, the meetings will be attended by world-famous filmmakers, experts and representatives of the film industry in general, who will meet with listeners. This year, the event will feature Don Davis, Zygmunt Konieczny, Anna G. Piotrowska, Małgorzata Przedpełska-Bieniek, Stanisław Radwan, Rafał Syska, Maciej Zieliński and many others.
Join us at the Festival Centre in the Krzysztofory Palace and the ICE Kraków Congress Centre to take part in the events organised as part of the FMF Audiovisual Forum. All meetings and workshops will be simultaneously interpreted into English or Polish, respectively. The 7th edition of the Forum was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Małopolska Region and the Polish Film Institute.
