Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in the summer of 1973. He started playing guitar as a 15-year-old and since then he was a member of several rock and punk bands such as Corrosão Caótica, Carbon H or Gazua.
In the spring of 2016, João started a solo project called O Gajo (The Dude) inspired by some of his world music references.
After almost 30 years of playing in rock bands, João turned his attention to a Portuguese roots sound and thus he embraced viola campaniça, a traditional stringed instrument which is popular within his country’s cultural history.
The first O Gajo album was released in May of 2017. Since then, Morais has been performing all over Portugal, gaining very positive feedback from both listeners and the media.
