FMF Young Talent Award

The theme of this year’s Young Talent Awardcontest held as part of the Krakow Film Music Festivalwill be a soundtrack to the2017 film “Spoor”directed by Agnieszka Holland. Contestants are tasked with composing a music to fragments of the film, which is going to be assessed by the international jury consisting of special guests to the 12th FMF. The winning suite will be performed at the ceremonious concert “Scoring4Polish Directors”, which will take place on 16 May at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre.

This year will see the seventh Young Talent Award contest. Its previous editions brought together just almost six hundred young composers from more than thirty countries. Main prize winners are currently active in the international film music market. Young Talent Award’s chief objective lies with selecting talented young composers and helping them reach the general public and global film industry representatives.

This year the contestants will be challenged by the film “Spoor” for which music was originally composed by Antoni Komasa-Łazarkiewicz. The movie is based on novel written by Olga Tokarczuk, the Booker Prize-winner. The picture directed by Agnieszka Holland tells the story of series of murders in the picturesque scenery of Kłodzko Valley. Critics describes  “Spoor” as subtle ecological thriller. We are open for applications from young (under 35 years old) composers to 7 April 2019. The compositions are going to be assessed by the international jury led by Richard Bellis – composer, educator, Emmy Award-Winner and the member of the Management Board of American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

Following formal verification, the jury will short-list twenty one scores for technical evaluation (correct use of musical instrument ranges and clefs, composition and size of the orchestral team, correct musical notation, rhythm grouping, indication of dynamics and articulation, etc.) and aesthetic assessment (i.a. musical language originality, interesting plot interpretation, music suitably linked to image). Apart from the names of the grand finalists, the jury will grant seven “wild cards” or invitations to take part in the 12th FMF’s Master Classes workshops. The main prize winner and two runners-up will be announced on 30 April 2019. Young Talent Award’s main prize is not only a statue but also the public performance of the winning piece during the concert “Scoring4Polish Directors” on 16 May at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre.
