FMF Young Talent Award
In 2018, the Young Talent Award contest held as part of the Krakow Film Music Festival will have a new theme: the2010 James Bond 007: Blood Stone score. Contestants will be tasked with composing a symphonic orchestral soundtrack to fragments of this action game. Richard Jacques, BAFTA and Ivor Novello nominated composer of the original 007: Blood Stone music score and special guest to the 11th FMF, will sit on the jury. The winning suite will be performed at the ceremonious Video Games Music Gala at TAURON Arena Krakow.
This year will see the sixth Young Talent Award contest. Its previous editions brought together just under 500 young composers from more than 30 countries. Main prize winners are currently active in the international film music market. Young Talent Award’s chief objective lies with selecting talented young composers and helping them reach the general public and global film industry representatives.
In 2018, we apply modified Rules and Regulations, under which the contest is divided into four evaluation stages. Following formal verification, the jury will short-list 21 scores for technical evaluation (correct use of musical instrument ranges and clefs, composition and size of the orchestral team, correct musical notation, rhythm grouping, indication of dynamics and articulation, etc.) and aesthetic assessment (i.a. musical language originality, interesting plot interpretation, music suitably linked to image). Apart from the names of the grand finalists, the jury will grant seven “wild cards” or invitations to take part in the 11th FMF’s Master Class workshops. The main prize winner and two runners-up will be announced on 24 April 2018. Young Talent Award’s main prize is a statue and the public performance of the winning piece during the Video Games Music Gala at the TAURON Arena in Krakow.
We are open for applications from young (under 35) composers from 15 February to 19 March 2018. An 8-member jury led by Agnieszka Holland will evaluate the submitted pieces. The jury will be composed of i.a. Robert Townson of Varèse Sarabande, the world’s most prolific film music and record producer, Chris Brown, the highly regarded composer and record producer of the UK-based West One Music Group, Diego Navarro – composer, conductor and director of the Fimucité – Tenerife International Film Festival, and Richard Jacques – author of the original James Bond 007: Blood Stone score. Classically trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Jacques is a versatile artist who mastered the piano, the trombone and the percussion. His extensive composer output spans almost all musical genres from classical orchestral pieces, through electronic music, modern jazz and film music themes, all the way to popular music genres. Jacques is best known for composing for television, advertising and computer games. The Headhunter score and live recordings of this action game’s soundtrack earned Jacques a Game Audio Network Guild (2003) award. In 2010, he composed the over 2-hour-long James Bond 007: Blood Stone soundtrack, which features the voices of Hollywood stars: Daniel Craig as James Bond, Judi Dench as M and Joss Stone as Nicole Hunter. Internationally acclaimed by critics as a “Modern classic Bond score” and “One of the most refreshing orchestral scores in many years,” Jacques’ music includes brand new themes for all of the major characters and settings as well as various ethnic instrumentation for the exotic locations that Bond visits, including Athens, Istanbul and Bangkok. The 007: Blood Stone score received top honours at The Music and Sound Awards for “Best Original Video Game Composition,” as well as recognition from BAFTA.
Richard Jacques is a close friend and frequent collaborator of London-based West One Music Group. This music agency, whose history of operation dates back to 2002, prepared a special prize for the winner of the 2018 Young Talent Award – The West One Music Group Young Composer Award. The main prize winner will be invited to take part in an orchestral recording session at a top recording studio with West One Music Group as they record a future release. The prize also entails meetings with orchestral musicians and record producers, active participation in the session (in both the concert hall and the director’s room) and insight into the inner workings of recording the highest quality music for media use. West One Music Group will cover flight costs and costs of accommodation in London. Submission of an application to the FMF Young Talent Award 2018 is tantamount to participation in the West One Music Group Young Composer Award 2018.
