2015 - Diego Navarro

Diego Navarro’s musical career began to flourish with the performance of his first composition at the age of 13.  At 21 he conducted an orchestra for the first time.
Presently the composer and orchestra conductor, specialized in film music, enjoys an international reputation.

Navarro composes, orchestrates and conducts his music. His most noteworthy film scores are "Oscar. Una pasión surrealista" (Oscar, The Color Of Destiny), a drama-biopic about the surrealist painter Oscar Domínguez, and the two award winning films "Puerta del Tiempo" (Time Gate), a cartoon feature film nominated as Best Animation Film in the XVII edition of Goya Awards (Spanish Film Academy), and “Mimesis: Night of the living dead”, his first incursion in the American Horror genre, among others.

In May 2010 a prestigious soundtrack record label Varèse Sarabande started releasing his music with a selection of the Navarro's music for "Oscar, the Color of Destiny" and “Look at the Moon”. He is one of the four Spanish composers included in the catalogue of this label. The editions of his music have received the best reviews in international magazines. Varèse has also released albums and DVDs of Navarro’s recordings as a conductor.

Navarro is the director and the father of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ), which started its first edition in 2007 obtaining great success (www.fimucite.com). Along 8 editions he has consolidated his international role promoting film music. Navarro has conducted a great number of world premieres, big Hollywood and European blockbusters, many of them specially arranged for FIMUCITÉ: “Perfume: History of a murderer”, Marvel’s super productions (“Ironman”, “Spiderman III”, “Thor”, or “Fantastic Four”) with a special emphasis on “Alien a Biomechanical Symphony”, a selection of the best music written for the 20th Century Fox Franchise (released by Varèse Sarabande), also performed during Krakow Film Music Festival in 2012.

It is also important to emphasize the tributes that he has conducted in FIMUCITÉ to important classic composers such as Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry and other contemporary maestros like Patrick Doyle or Antón García Abril, among many others. The Universal Pictures Studios 100th Anniversary Concert, Dreamworks Animation Studios Tribute, James Bond 50th Anniversary, Varèse Sarabande's 35th Anniversary as well as Cinema of Art & Blood, celebrating the music of Elliot Goldenthal,  make part of Navarro’s conducting highlights.

Navarro’s latest success in FIMUCITÉ VIII, celebrated in July 2014, include the world premiere of “The Dark Knight: A Gotham Symphony”, an ambitious symphonic piece that gathers the best scores ever written for Batman to celebrate his 75th anniversary, including the world premiere of “The Grand Gothic Suite” arranged for the festival by an Oscar-winning Elliot Goldenthal.

Diego Navarro has a strong link with the FMF in Krakow since 2009, where the brotherhood between both International Film Music Festivals started when he first conducted at the Blonia Fields. This year Diego Navarro was invited again to assume the responsibility of conducting the James Bond tribute (co-produced with FIMUCITÉ) at the Krakow Arena as well as the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) 100th  Anniversary concert, where he will work with Hans Zimmer, Elliot Goldenthal, Dario Marianelli, Patrick Doyle and more.

Diego has just finished writing the soundtrack for a feature documentary film and is excited starting with his new assignment.

FMF Ambassador

The award is meant for those who have worked to raise the prestige and industry connections of the festival in Poland and abroad. The minimalist brass statue, created by Stanisław Juszczak, shows two cog wheels – one cannot turn without setting the other in motion. It is an interconnected system, in which success depends on cooperation and mutual assistance. In fact, the award is dedicated to all those who are friends and facilitators, who create lasting connections with the world and constantly strive for more of them. See more
