2014 - Nancy Knutsen

Nancy Knutsen joined ASCAP’s Los Angeles staff in 1988, and after having served as the Senior Vice President of Film and Television Repertory for many years she is now ASCAP’s Special Consultant for Film and Television Music.
In her new role, Nancy continues to promote activities in film, television and concert music both in the United States and internationally. She was the driving force in establishing a full-service film and television music department at ASCAP, which has set new standards in serving the needs of its members. She developed a staff in Los Angeles and New York whose specific responsibilities include signing new composers to ASCAP, and she has created many career-building opportunities for ASCAP composers, as well as producing ASCAP’s annual Film and Television Music Awards, workshops, and other tributes and events.

Nancy has represented ASCAP at film and music conferences throughout the world, including the Sundance, Seattle, Vancouver, SXSW and Toronto Film Festivals, the Ghent International Film Festival, the Ubeda (Spain) and Tenerife, Canary Islands Film Music Festivals, the Film Music Festival of Krakow, Poland as well as the Santa Barbara, Palm Springs and many other California-based festivals. She is also a regular attendee and speaker at such prestigious music festivals and conferences as the Tanglewood Music Festival and Music Center, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and many others. She has produced film music concerts with major American and international orchestras, as well as film music panels in Canada, England, Ireland, France, Belgium, Spain, Poland, Australia and New Zealand.

In doing so, Nancy has helped to deepen relationships with many foreign performing rights organizations and composers from throughout the world. She also speaks regularly at colleges and universities about the creative and business aspects of composing for film and television. Nancy is an advisory board member of the Young Musicians Foundation and a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Women in Film, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. She is a founding member of the Advisory Committee of the World Soundtrack Academy, headquartered in Belgium, and is also on the Advisory Board of the Ubeda Film Music Conference, held each year in July.

Prior to joining ASCAP, Nancy was Assistant to composer/conductor John Williams, while also working as a manager of the Boston Pops and Boston Symphony Orchestras. She traveled extensively throughout the world as the tour manager of both orchestras. She worked as an agent for Columbia Artists Management upon first moving to Los Angeles in 1987, and as production administrator for an animation studio in London, England while living there in the late 1970's, when she also accompanied the London Sympony on several tours.

Throughout her career, Nancy has worked with some of the most prestigious composers and conductors of our time, including Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Andre Previn, John Williams, Henry Mancini, and many of today’s most sought-after film composers.

FMF Ambassador

The award is meant for those who have worked to raise the prestige and industry connections of the festival in Poland and abroad. The minimalist brass statue, created by Stanisław Juszczak, shows two cog wheels – one cannot turn without setting the other in motion. It is an interconnected system, in which success depends on cooperation and mutual assistance. In fact, the award is dedicated to all those who are friends and facilitators, who create lasting connections with the world and constantly strive for more of them. See more
