Craig Armstrong wins the 2019 Kilar Award!

Craig Armstrong will receive the statuette during the FMF Gala: The Glamorous Show on Sunday, the 19th of May in TAURON Arena Kraków. The substantive jury decided to distinguish an outstanding composer of film music, creator of soundtracks for such films as Moulin Rouge! The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet! and Far from the Madding Crowd. The Wojciech Kilar Award is granted for faithfulness to the traditional art of composing, masterful use of musical language and creative use of colours, tone and texture.

The award was established by the Mayors of Krakow and Katowice and intended for artists who, like the award’s patron, guard the ethos and tradition of the art of composing, create recognisable, beautiful soundtracks and enrich the world repertoire of film music with works that do not lose their clarity when isolated from the motion picture.

Craig Armstrong was selected to be the 5th laureate of the Wojciech Kilar Award in history. Born in 1959, the British composer has written music for both Hollywood films and independent productions. His works include well-known films, including Moulin Rouge!, Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby, Love Actually, Far from the Madding Crowd, Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Craig Armstrong won a Grammy Award for his soundtrack to Taylor Hackford's Ray. He has been awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to the music industry (2010) and the Henry Mancini Award, an award granted by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (2016).

Amstrong is a versatile composer, famous for his tendency to freely mix various musical languages and masterfully combining two distant worlds – classic and popular music. His collaboration with Massive Attack resulted in the legendary Protection. After that, he released his own album – The Space Between Us, which consolidated his musical style of freely mixing classical and electronic music. Since then, he has been a favourite composer in the industry, collaborating with Madonna, U2, Tina Turner and Spice Girls. At the same time, he was selected by the Royal Shakespeare Company to create music for two of Michael Boyd's stage adaptations - The Tempest by William Shakespeare and The Broken Heart by John Ford.

The award ceremony will take place during the FMF Gala: The Glamorous Show concert. The winner was selected by the Award Jury chaired by the Chairman of the Council - Robert Piaskowski, Artistic Director of the FMF. This year the Jury comprised representatives of cultural institutions from all over Poland: Ewa Bogusz-Moore (Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra), Daniel Cichy (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne), Izabela Helbin (Krakow Festival Office), Ewa Miszczak (RMF Classic), Paweł Pawlik (RMF Classic), Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa and Piotr Zaczkowski (Katowice City of Gardens).

In previous years, the Wojciech Kilar Award was presented to: Alexandre Desplat (2015), Elliot Goldenthal (2016), Howard Shore (2017), Mycheal Nyman (2018).
